Histopathology & Biopsy Testing in Visakhapatnam

Microscopic examination of tissue and cell samples by pathologists – essential for confirming diagnoses, including cancer.

OVERVIEW

About histopathology at SMS Diagnostics

Histopathology is the microscopic study of tissue removed during a biopsy or surgery. Cytopathology examines individual cells collected through procedures such as FNAC (fine needle aspiration cytology) or a Pap smear. These examinations are often the definitive step in diagnosing tumours, cancers, inflammatory conditions and many other diseases.

At SMS Diagnostics, Visakhapatnam, tissue specimens are processed, sectioned, stained and reviewed by a pathologist, who prepares a detailed report for your treating doctor. We work with surgeons, gynaecologists and clinicians across Vizag and guide patients and families on how to bring specimens to the laboratory correctly.

  • Routine cervical cancer screening for women
  • Non-healing ulcers or unexplained skin lesions

PREPARATION

How to prepare

  • Tissue specimens should be placed in 10% formalin immediately after removal, in a leak-proof container – your surgeon or hospital normally does this.
  • Ensure the container is labelled with the patient's name, age, specimen site and date.
  • Bring the doctor's requisition with clinical history and any imaging or previous reports.
  • Pap smear: best done midway between periods; avoid intercourse, douching and vaginal medicines for 48 hours before.
  • Contact us before bringing a specimen if you have any questions about transport.

Always follow the instructions given by your doctor or our laboratory staff.

Frequently asked questions

Tap a question to see the answer.

How long does a biopsy report take?

Histopathology involves several processing steps – fixation, processing, sectioning and staining – so reports typically take several working days. Larger specimens or special stains may take longer. Please contact us for an estimate.

What is the difference between FNAC and biopsy?

FNAC uses a thin needle to collect cells from a lump, while a biopsy removes a piece of tissue. A biopsy shows tissue structure and is often needed to confirm a diagnosis.

Can I bring a biopsy sample from another hospital?

Yes. Make sure the specimen is in 10% formalin in a sealed, labelled container and bring the doctor's requisition form.

How often should a woman have a Pap smear?

Screening intervals depend on age and previous results. Many guidelines advise a Pap smear every 3 years for women aged 21–65; your gynaecologist will advise you.

Who reports the biopsy?

Histopathology slides are examined and reported by a qualified pathologist.
