OUR DEPARTMENTS

Laboratory Departments at SMS Diagnostics

Eight specialised laboratory departments covering pathology, biochemistry, haematology, microbiology, serology, histopathology, molecular and hormone testing in Visakhapatnam.

DEPARTMENT 01

Clinical Pathology

Clinical pathology is the branch of laboratory medicine that examines body fluids such as urine, stool, semen and other fluids to help detect, diagnose and monitor disease. These are often the first tests a doctor orders, because simple, inexpensive investigations can reveal a great deal – from a urinary tract infection or kidney stress to intestinal parasites or hidden blood in the stool.

Biochemistry

Clinical biochemistry measures chemicals in the blood and body fluids – glucose, cholesterol, enzymes, proteins, electrolytes and waste products. These values show how well vital organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart and pancreas are working, and they are essential for diagnosing and monitoring conditions like diabetes, fatty liver, kidney disease and high cholesterol.

Haematology

Haematology is the study of blood and its components – red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets – along with the clotting system. A blood count is one of the most frequently ordered tests in medicine because changes in these cells can point to anaemia, infections, inflammation, bleeding disorders and many other conditions.

DEPARTMENT 04

Microbiology

Medical microbiology identifies the microorganisms – bacteria, fungi and parasites – that cause infection. Culture and sensitivity (C&S) testing grows the organism from your sample and then tests which antibiotics are effective against it. This helps your doctor choose the right treatment, avoid unnecessary antibiotics, and fight the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance.

Serology & Immunology

Serology tests detect antibodies produced by your immune system or antigens from an infecting organism in the blood. Immunology tests measure markers of inflammation and immune activity. Together they help diagnose infections such as dengue, typhoid and hepatitis, and conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Histopathology

Histopathology is the microscopic study of tissue removed during a biopsy or surgery. Cytopathology examines individual cells collected through procedures such as FNAC (fine needle aspiration cytology) or a Pap smear. These examinations are often the definitive step in diagnosing tumours, cancers, inflammatory conditions and many other diseases.

Molecular Diagnostics

Molecular diagnostics detect the genetic material (DNA or RNA) of a virus, bacterium or the patient's own cells. Techniques such as PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and RT-PCR amplify tiny amounts of genetic material, making these tests extremely sensitive and specific. They can often identify infections earlier than antibody tests and can measure the amount of virus in the blood.
